ABC by Dr. Seuss
ABC By Dr. Seuss - the Fun Way to Learn your Alphabet!
The night before I started the first grade I anxiously went to my parents and with great consternation I told them "I am scared because I don't know my alphabet." My father kindly told me "I think there will be lots of children there who do not know their alphabet.."
That was true of course, but it didn't have to be - if my folks had known about Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book!
This book by Dr. Seuss is definitely the most fun way that I know of to teach and learn the alphabet. Dr. Seuss combined his inimitable art and characters with a strong phonetic teaching of the alphabet to make it unforgettable and well - really fun! I think the best way to learn the alphabet is to have a loved one read this book to the young children in their lives - over and over again, and to reinforce it with playing the CD's.

Dr. Seuss's Amazing ABC Book - Very Funny Alphabet book
I can't guarantee that your child will learn the alphabet if you read this book to them, but I almost can. Of course if they are like my kids - they will want it read over and over and over.

Reading Out Loud truly is Fundamental to a Child's Well Being
And Some Kids Are not Learning the Skill of their Alphabet
Lately there have been more and more programs to teach children literacy, especially using the computer. These are all well and good, but I will never believe they will replace simple out loud reading to your children. For forty years, Reading is Fundamental has delivered books to children and their families to help promote this activity. Reading out loud can begin at birth, and in fact it is recommended that it do so. The Reading is Fundamental Site, or your local librarian can help you choose great books for all ages of your child.
Recently a friend of mine took a job at a retail store, and she was asked to alphabetize some records. Apparently many employees did not have that skill, just as they could not make change without the cash register, or add and subtract without a calculator. Many people just don't learn basic skills. And as wonderful as the computer and technology is, there is a danger that by over relying on it we will lose our ability to perform basic skills.
Dr. Seuss's ABC's was published in 1963, and the combination of zany art, rhyming, and repetition make it a perfect way to learn the ABC's even now.
