The difference is that costume jewelry was and is created with other than fine jewels: paste beads, different types of glass, even modified paper. Fine jewelry of course, is made of precious or semi-precious stones.

Fruit salad jewelry, whether costume jewelry or fine jewelry may be gaudy and kitsch, but it is somehow very pretty as well. And of course it comes in all the colors of the rainbow.
