Mothers Days Presents for All My Moms
Mother's Day is a Day to Celebrate our Mothers and the Women Who Serve as Our Mothers
Mother's Day is a day set aside to honor our mothers - but we can never, ever repay our mothers.
My own mother was an incredible woman, always thinking of others, always giving. You never went hungry at her house. And I have been blessed by several mothers - why have I been so lucky?
By the nature of the gig, motherhood requires sacrifice - sacrifice so great that I wonder if we all would agree to it if we knew what it was going to entail. But the sacrifice is not required all at once - when you are pregnant you sacrifice your body, when you raise an infant you sacrifice your sleep, when they are a teenager you sacrifice the sense of control that you once had over them that kept them safe.
But besides the huge forces of nature that want us to procreate, is the reality that motherhood with its struggles - brings the greatest joys imaginable. While they are different in every family, there is something magical in that journey that starts when the baby looks up with you with those eyes to the pride you feel as you realize that you have raised a wonderful adult that is unparalleled.
And so we honor our mothers at Mothers Day. But not just our mothers, but other women who have nurtured us - grandmothers, mother-in-laws, aunts or other older women who nurture us. If we are lucky, we have several mothers in our lives.

Gaia is the Mother of Us All - We Honor all Mothers as We Honor Mother Earth
In Greek mythology Gaia is the mother of us all, she ruled over the Earth, the sea gods and the Earth gods were her children. As of late the idea of the Earth as a Great Mother that protects and nourishes us - as well as admonishes us has come back into vogue.
In literature Earth is seen as female, in a love affair with her consort the Sky.
I am very conscious of my footstep on the Earth, and feel the Earth has a consciousness. I think we can all understand how Gaia could be displeased, and we should see what we can do to heal the world.
We honor all who have raised children or cared for other beings when we honor Gaia.

Ancient Cultures all Celebrated the Festivals of the Mother
Early Mother Days
The Egyptians celebrated the festival of their beautiful and powerful Mother Goddess Isis. The Greeks celebrated their Mother Goddess Rhea.
The Romans paid homage to her as well, but they also created the holiday of the Magna Mater or the Great Mother in a way that was similar to our Mother's Day in a Spring time festival.
With the arrival of Christianity, there was no longer a belief in the Mother Goddess. However, this belief metamorphosed into speaking of the Mother Church - who was the Bride of Christ as well as a deep reverence for the Virgin Mary Mother. There are many festivals and feasts for her.
Ancient Egytpian Great Mother - Goddess Bast
Bast - aka Bastet -is a protector of women, cats and much more. I was mystified and awed to learn of her. I believe that the ancient Egytians were right that she is a force to be reckoned with.
I first learned of her when I read Bastet, Goddess of Joy by Nightcat. Nightcat is very informed, and very wise. It is heartening for me to learn how many lensmasters appreciate ancient ways and the Great Mother. Gives me hope that we might save Mother Earth after all.

When Did Mother Day's Come About?
Julia Ward Howe is credited with starting the modern Mother's Day.
A little More about the History of Mother's Day
The Church in the 1600's decided that it was about time to honor our real mothers. Mothering Day was created - a holiday during Lent where it was encouraged to take a day and honor mothers. This actually became a holiday of relief and compassion for all people, including the poor. This is because Mothering Day was a day of rest for servants and working people: they were allowed a day of vacation to visit their Mothers, even if they had to travel to visit her.
Unfortunately Mothering Day was not allowed to continue in the Puritan New World. Many holidays fell by the wayside: Easter, etc as pagan holidays.
But the desire and need to have a day to visit our Mothers continued.
The birth of the "modern Mother's Day" came about when in 1870 Julia Ward Howe published a poem an international Mother's Day celebrating peace and motherhood. It is ironic that they woman who brought us the Battle Hymn of the Republic because of her love of the Union and loathing of slavery - became one of the main proponents of pacifism after the Civil War.
Howe had become disgusted by recognizing how many people became killed during war and she decided that women, especially Mothers should take the lead in promoting pacifism. Julia Ward Howe is credited with bringing about Mother's Day, and helping us recognize the contributions women make.
Julia Ward Howe was an amazing woman, and an interesting one. She published Passion-Flowers in 1853 which was a collection of very personal love poems to her husband. She did this without his knowledge, so it might have made for some interesting discussions.
Mother's Day became an official holiday during the work of Anna M. Jarvis. She made it her personal project to bring about the adoption of Mother's Day as a National Holiday. She continued with Julia Ward Howe's focus on peace - and by 1908 there was an official Mother's Day in this country.
Julia Ward Howe, a loyal patriot, who like all women who are mothers dreamed of a day when there was no war.

Most scientists and general observers agree that there is a biological instinct to care for our young. This blood drive is primal, and it goes beyond anything we plan. It isn't even reasonable.
But what is amazing is when our surrogate "mothers" - without the benefit of instinct care for us like we are our own. That is a special type of love indeed.
If Your Mother is No Longer Living
One of the best ways that I have found to deal with missing my mom on Mother's Day is to honor all the women who have supported and touched my life and my heart, and to honor all the women I know who are Mothers. There are many aunties, grandmothers and even friends who are like mothers that deserve our appreciation. An unexpected card can make a big difference in some one's life!
